Leadership Education to Advance Diversity- African, Black and Caribbean (LEAD-ABC) Academy

What is LEAD-ABC Academy?

LEAD-ABC Academy is a one-week program designed to help future physician-leaders who aspire to address the health needs of African, Black and Caribbean (ABC) communities gain knowledge, skills, and experience which will advance their ability to champion social justice and foster health equity.

Who should apply?

The application process is competitive.  Candidates should have enrolled, or completed degrees, in 4-year undergraduate institutions.  Like LEAD-ABC medical student scholars, they should have a record of experience in disadvantaged ABC communities and a clear goal to serve these communities in medical school and beyond.   We expect LEAD-ABC Academy graduates to have a great experience and apply to UC Irvine LEAD-ABC soon!

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the UCI School of Medicine cannot have students on campus for the 2021 summer academies.  Our virtual LEAD-ABC Academy is a one-week (Mon-Fri) half-day experience from approximately 9AM-1PM.  While we are continuing to develop our virtual curriculum, we anticipate our LEAD-ABC Academy Scholars will take part in a variety of activities including:

  • Leadership Training - LEAD-ABC Academy pre-health scholars will receive instruction on being a successful physician-leader from experienced faculty and volunteers.
  • Remote Procedure Workshops- Scholars will learn the basics in common medical procedures.
  • LEAD-ABC Medical Student Forum- Current UCI Medical Students will give fascinating insight into the life of a medical student.
  • Community Experience - Scholars will attend activities scheduled at community-based sites that partner with LEAD-ABC in Central Orange County and Long Beach, California. Activities may include direct patient care, health education, and mentorship in a virtual environment.  Optional in-person opportunities may be available if State and local health and safety guidelines allow.
  • Program Research Capstone - Scholars will learn to construct a research question and present it based on a thorough academic literature review.
