UCI MedAcademy: An Immersive Medical School Experience

What is UCI MedAcademy?

UCI MedAcademy is a five-day experience designed to introduce high school students to medical careers. Hosted by the UC Irvine School of Medicine, our unique curriculum focuses on education and hands-on experience to broaden student’s understanding of the healthcare field. Our UCI MedAcademy Scholars will receive instruction from experts in the medical field and have the opportunity to experience world-class technologies in medical education.

UCI MedAcademy is a one-week (Mon-Fri) day summer camp experience running from approximately 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. daily. Hosted at the UC Irvine School of Medicine, our program is open to high school students (including 2020 graduates) ages 15-19. Our MedAcademy Scholars will take part in a variety of activities including:

  • Health Careers ForumPanel discussion on various health care careers and the academic path into those fields.
  • Medical LecturesOur scholars will be lectured by UCI School of Medicine Faculty covering various medical topics.
  • Anatomy ExperienceScholars will receive hands-on experience with human anatomy and dissections.  
  • Medical ResuscitationIn the renowned UCI Medical Education Simulation Center, learners will learn and practice the basics of medical resuscitation.
  • Procedure WorkshopsScholars will learn the basics in suturing, ultrasound and other common medical procedures. 
  • Medical Student ForumCurrent UCI Medical Students will give fascinating insights into the life of a medical student. 
  • Graduation CelebrationMedAcademy Scholars will receive a certificate of completion and be honored at a graduation celebration.

The Summer 2021 Academies may be held in person, if health guidelines allow, or offered as a remote experience. We expect to have more information and applications available on this website by late February. Please click here if you would like to be added to our interest list.


UCI is committed to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to become a MedAcademy Scholar. Partial and full scholarships are available to students with financial hardship.

How many participants do you accept for each session? »
How do I submit my materials?  »
Applications must be submitted online using the link on our website. Student evaluation forms can be submitted by a school teacher or counselor to The evaluation form must be emailed directly from your teacher or counselor’s school-sponsored email account. You can access the evaluation form on our home page. Please note that your application will not be considered complete until we receive the evaluation form.
Who is eligible? »
High school students (including graduating seniors) ages 15-19.
Do I need to send a copy of my school transcript or grades?  »
No, you only need to submit the program application and ask a teacher or counselor to submit an evaluation form. If you are accepted to the program, you will be required to submit additional documentation (e.g., waivers, immunization records).
Do you offer any discounts for early registration, multiple siblings, UCI employees, etc.?  »
We do not offer any discounts at this time. We do not want cost to be prohibitive for our scholars. Please see the Scholarships section if you have financial hardship that would prevent attendance due to cost.
When is tuition due and how do I pay?  »
After students are notified of acceptance, tuition will be due in full within one week of acceptance notification. If tuition is not paid by that time, students on our waitlist will be offered a position in our program.
Do you accept cash, check, or credit card? »
We accept credit-card for payment only.
Do you have a room and board option?  »
The MedAcademy is a day camp. We do not provide overnight lodging. Families traveling from outside the area may find a list of local hotels here. Please note we are not responsible for your housing accommodations.
Is this program open to international students? »
International students are welcome to apply. Please note that we are unable to assist with travel or visa arrangements.
Do I get high school or college credit for completing MedAcademy?  »
MedAcademy is not meant to replace high school or college course work and does not grant academic credit. Additionally, there are no tests or grades. However, you will receive a certificate of completion and may list the experience on college applications and resumes.
Am I allowed to miss part of the program if I have conflicting obligations?  »
In order to get the most out of this immersive experience, students are expected to be present for the entirety of the curriculum. We are happy to work with families on a case by case basis if an extenuating circumstance would require a short absence.
Are parents allowed to attend/observe any workshops or events? »
The majority of our activities are open to student participants only. Parents/family will be invited to our closing celebration to celebrate our scholars.
Will meals and/or snacks be served?  »
Continental breakfast, lunch, and a light snack will be served daily.
What if I have allergies to certain foods or cannot eat certain foods due to religious or personal beliefs?  »
We are happy to accomodate most food restrictions. Scholars will notify us of these restrictions in the enrollment process after acceptance.
What should I wear?  »
Please wear school-appropriate clothing on the first day. We will provide you with a MedAcademy t-shirt when you check in. We will also provide you with scrubs on the day of the gross anatomy workshop. Business casual attire will be required on the day we visit the medical center in Orange. 
What should I bring?  »

We will provide you with a t-shirt, padfolio, and pen on the first day. Please bring these items with you each day. You are not required to bring anything else; however, you may want to bring some of the following optional items: 

  • Reusable water bottle (Highly recommended. Filling stations are available on campus.) 
  • Snacks/Food (if you have special dietary needs or would like extra snacks during the day)
Do I need to pay for parking?  »
All vehicles parked on the campus are required to display a valid parking permit at all times. We do not provide parking permits for program participants or parents. Permit rates and dispenser locations are available at the UCI Parking website. We recommend you park in Lot 83, Grid G3 on the UCI Campus Map.
