About the Division of Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and inclusion are core values that invigorate the UC Irvine School of Medicine's mission: Discover. Teach. Heal.

We are committed to recruiting, admitting and educating talented students — as well as hiring and promoting faculty and staff members — whose backgrounds reflect California’s rich ethnic and cultural diversity. We seek to train disadvantaged students and those with a strong desire to work with underserved groups, in particular the state's underserved Latino populations.

We embrace and celebrate differences of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, language, military service, disability and socio-economic status because they inform our world view and that of our medical students. Our commitment also includes the recruitment and retention of faculty and senior administrative staff who represent our diverse communities.

We believe that by intentionally embracing diversity in biomedical sciences, we are building an inclusive educational framework to prepare future physicians, scientists and leaders who can improve the health of the state's varied patient populations, all the while striving for excellence in research, teaching and community service.

By promoting excellence in biomedical sciences in Orange County and beyond, our faculty, students and staff members are advancing a model of health, healing and well-being that is focused on the individual — and is both culturally sensitive and responsive to the needs of our many communities.

Thank you for your interest.

Sincerely,

Dr. Charles P. Vega, associate dean, Division of Diversity and Inclusion

Dr. Carol A. Major, assistant dean, Division of Diversity and Inclusion
