Second-Year Curriculum

The second year of the pre-clerkship curriculum consists of three blocks — Infection and Host Response, Blood and Inflammation, and Disease & Therapeutics — and a clinical thread that runs concurrently with the curriculum.

Students also receive dedicated time to prepare for Step 1 of the USMLE Licensing Examination.

Infection and Host Response/Blood and Inflammation

This block covers:

  • Medical Microbiology
  • Antibiotics
  • Immunopathology
  • Immunopharmacology

Disease and Therapeutics

This block includes:

  • Systematic Pathology
  • Clinical Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Ethics

It is organized into these modules:

  • Cardiovascular
  • Pulmonary
  • Renal
  • Urogenital
  • Gynecologic
  • Endocrine
  • GI
  • Musculoskeletal
  • Hematologic
  • Neurologic

Clinical Thread

The second-year curriculum also includes a clinical thread comprised of the Clinical Foundations II course and the Patient-Centered Clinical Education 2 course.

Students continue to use point-of-care ultrasound, the Simulation Center and the Clinical Skills Center to prepare them for clinical clerkships.
